Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student has basic knowledge on the pathogenesis, development and prognosis of surgical pathologies. Moreover, he should know the clinical methodology and semiotic topics useful for the recognition and interpretation of different clinical manifestations in case of surgical diseases of Large animals.

Course contents

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge to perform a complete physical examination in large animals, when a surgical disease occurs.

Knowledge about the disease processes also allows the student to conduct the logical-deductive reasoning necessary to address the surgical patient.

The course is divided into the following main topics:

· Clinical methodology : history and assessment of the symptom.

· Pathological basic processes

· Pathology, diagnosis and prognosis of disease related to : digestive system, urinary tract, respiratory system, respiratory system, foot and muscle-tendon system.

Teaching methods

The course is composed by frontal lessons and practical lessons.

In order to permit a full participation to the practical classes, practical lessons will be performed dividing students in four groups, each one receiving the same hours of practice.

During practical classes in the presence of animals,  student must wear a clean green and / or white coat  as medical setting, as well as suitable footwear as required by the Department's Safety Regulation.

Any further DPI will be provided by the teacher.

The practical training aims the student to acquire a correct logic-deductive approach to the management of surgical case.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test, both must be passed in the same exam session. A negative result in the written test does not allow to sit the oral test. Written test (1 hour) is composed by open and/or multichoice questions. Both tests will be considered passed if a minimal marks of 18/30 is obtained.

Students who does not pass the exam is allowed to sit the next examination after not less than three weeks.

Particular attention is made to the student's ability to reason and to cross-link the information acquired by different teaching in previous years.

Registration and examination dates: The student can register exclusively using the online Alma Esami system.

The final mark examation will be recorded by Dr. Giuseppe Spinella for Erasmu studets.
