04422 - General Chemistry

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Veterinary Medicine (cod. 8617)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the students know the properties of compounds and elements of biological interest and properly understand the chemical-biological processes through the concepts of equilibrium and thermodynamic, with particular reference to processes in aqueous solution.

Course contents

Constitution and properties of matter. Atomic structure. Periodic system. Chemical bond. Nomenclature of inorganic compounds. States of matter. Acids and bases. Chemical reactions and stoichiometry. Solutions and their properties. Chemical kinetics. Chemical equilibrium. Homogeneous equilibria in aqueous solutions: self-dissociation of water, pH, pH of acid and base solutions; hydrolysis; pH buffers; titrations; amphoteric compounds. Heterogeneous equilibria and solubility product. Bases of electrochemistry and thermodynamics applied to biological systems.
