90316 - General Pathology Lab-based Course (A)

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 8415)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows the general aspects of histopathology and recognizes the microscopic cell and tissue changes caused by diseases and by defence reactions. He/she is able to establish the relationship between tissue changes and disease mechanisms. He/she knows the limits and the potential of histopathology.

Course contents

Epithelial and mesenchimal tumors, metastasis. Cellular swelling, steatosis, amyloidosis, necrosis, infarction. Acute and chronic inflammation, granulation tissue. Sclerosis, cirrhosis, atherosclerosis, thrombosis.

Readings/Bibliography

BATTELLI M.G., Atlante di istopatologia, CLUEB.

Teaching methods

Students will be split in 4 groups to ensure the individual access to microscopes. A teacher will be present to answer questions.

Assessment methods

Histopathology will be a part of the Pathology and Physiopathology exam. Students will be asked to recognize one of the histological preparations described during the course and to discuss it in the context of the knowledge acquired during the study of Pathology and Physiopathology.

Teaching tools

The histopathology lab is equipped with 48 microscopes and a projection system connected with a microscope.

Tissue slides can be seen “on-line” through the virtual microscopy service (virtualmicroscopy.patologia-sperimentale.unibo.it/ ). The platform allows to “navigate” the tissue sections representative of vascular diseases, acute and chronic inflammation, benign and malignant tumors and metastasis. Each tissue sample is explained by a presentation from Prof.  Fabio Dall'Olio which can be seen and downloaded from the AMPCampus site ( http://campus.unibo.it/162193/ ).

UNIBO users can access the service through their University username and password. External users must register, following the indication published on the website.
