Learning outcomes

Students are introduced to the principles of healthcare organization and policy in a comparative perspective.

By the end of the course, the student is able to: 1) Identify the key characteristics and components of healthcare systems. 2) Assess each healthcare systems strengths and weaknesses.

Special attention is paid to the analysis of the Italian healthcare system.

Course contents

The course is divided into two parts.

The first part deals with the different models through which health services can be funded and delivered. The health systems of the major OECD countries will be compared.

The second part focuses on the analysis of the Italian healthcare system. We will start from the history of the Italian health system. We’ll then analyze the architecture and the basic principles of the Italian National Health Service, the various regional systems, the problems and challenges the Italian health system is currently tackling.

Teaching methods

Teacher lectures and classroom discussions. Class attendance is strongly recommended.

Assessment methods

Written examination (75 minutes), held in class. The exam consists of 5 open questions.
