Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide students the basic knowledge on the
identification of patients' distress conditions and the appropriate
forms of interventions, and the basic skills
to manage physician's relationship with patients.
At the end of the course the student will know the principal
theoretical models, having a deepeer understanding of
psychopathological syndroms, psychological assessment and
interventions.
The student will understand the factors behind the development and
maintainance of symtom manifestations across childhood and
adulthood (trauma, psychic conflict, defense mechanisms,
stress)ò
the emotional implications related to physical illness,
therapy
and hospitalization (defensive reactions, compliance, placebo
effect, burnout). He/she will be able to
apply the basic priciples of psychological intervantion in health
care and practice,
with particular attention to the flow of the clinical interview and
the dynamics of the relationship with patients.
Course contents
- theoretical models of the clinical psychology and interventions;
- methodological approaches: clinical vs. experimental method;
- professionals' competencies: psychodiagnosis and psychotherapy;
- psychodiagnostic assessment: nosographic approach and psychodynamic interpretation of the symptom;
- psychosomatic disorders;
- psychological development and organization of normal and pathological personality;
- early traumatic experiences and pats of the psychological suffering;
- the psychological conflict and the defense mechanisms;
- stress;
- psychological reactions to illness and their implications for its evolution, cure and recovery;
- clinical interview;
- psychometric tests;
- psychological intervention in health practice;
- the communication with the patient and the management of the relational dynamics;
- the burn-out in health professions;

Assessment methods
The exam consists on an oral examination. Students' knowledge on the course contents, as well as the acquisition of relational competencies for the management of the doctor patient relationship, will be assessed.
