Learning outcomes

Psychiatry course trains students to recognize the major mental disorders and to set an appropriate therapeutic project. In particular, at the end of the course the student knows the clinical interview fundamentals, psychopathology and major psychiatric disorders in the medicine practice, both in hospital and outpatient settings. The student acquires knowledge on the relationship between the internal medical or surgical disorders and mental disorders, on psychosomatic medicine and on consultation-liaison psychiatry related issues. The student is able to make a diagnosis of mental disorder and has a basic knowledge of several specialized sectors of psychiatry, including drug addiction psychiatry, psychogeriatrics, psychiatry of adolescence, eating disorders. Regarding treatment, he is able to establish a doctor-patient relationship and to use properly the psychiatric drugs, and he knows the introductory elements of psychodynamic psychiatry. Furthermore, the students acquires knowledge of the psychiatric legislation and organization of psychiatric care in Italy in order to be able to collaborate with the local hospital and specialist services. Finally, the student knows the biopsychosocial model applied to mental disorders and the major psychosocial and rehabilitational treatments.
