Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will get a base knowledge on the most important congenital malformations of the respiratory, digestive and genito-urinary tract and on the most frequent pediatric pathologies that require surgical treatment. Furthermore the student will acquire the clinical capability of formulating a diagnosis with the correct use of the most common investigations. He or she will get to know the surgical procedures in order to correct such pathologies, both with a tradional open and minimally invasive approach.
Course contents
Congenital chest wall deformities: pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, bifidity of the sternum. Congenital cystic pulmonary airway malformations (CPAMs): pulmonary sequestration, bronchogenic cyst, congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation. Postero-lateral congenital diaphragmatic hernia (Bochdalek hernia). Retrosternal congenital diaphragmatic hernia (Morgagni-Larrey hernia). Congenital diaphragmatic eventration. Esophageal atresia. Esophageal achalasia. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease in children. Congenital Defects of the Abdominal Wall: omphalocele and gastroschisis. Disorders of Intestinal Rotation and Fixation. Pyloric stenosis. Intestinal atresia. Ano-rectal malformations. Meconium ileus. Hirschprung disease. Alimentary Tract Duplications. Meckel diverticulum. Intussusception. Acute appendicitis. Biliary atresia. Choledochal cyst. Cholelithiasis. Phymosis. Hypospadias. Varicocele. Persistent Patent processus vaginalis: inguinal hernia, hydroceles, spermatic chord hydroceles. Undescended testis and cryptorchidism. Acute scrotum. Multicystic kidney. Hydronephrosis. Primitive obstructive Megaureter. Vesico-ureteral reflux. Posterior urethral valves. Wilms' tumor. Neuroblastoma. Hepatic tumors.
