Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will be able to recognise clinical presentation (signs and symptoms) and to interpret laboratory and imaging results in order to diagnose the major rheumatic disorders. The course will focus on joint diseases and allied conditions, since connective tissue diseases are part of the Clinical Immunology course. A general introduction to treatment strategies will be also provided.

Course contents

- Anatomy, histology and physiology of the joint

- Sign and symptoms of inflammatory and non-inflammatory joint disorders

- Rheumatoid arthritis

- Serenegative spondiloarthritis

- Idiopatic juvenile arthritis

- Infectious arthritis

- Crystal deposition arthropaties (gout)

- Inflammatory miopathies

- Rheumatic plymialgia and introduction to vasculitides

Teaching methods

The course is composed of a 8-hour cycle (1 CFU) of lectures

Assessment methods

The test of Rheumatology consists of 20 multiple choice questions, which are part of the final examination of the integrated course of Hematology, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology composed of a totla of 60 multiple choice question: 20 (hematology) + 20 (clinical immunology) + 20 (rheumatology). The final examination lasts 60 minutes and the student can give only on answer for each question. The final score will be the result of the global performance on the three subjects. 

Upon request, students can be assessed by an oral examination in one session for each term

Teaching tools

The teaching tool (Power point file) is given to the students in advance. The material should be printed and brought by the students to be used during the lecture
