Learning outcomes

The course provides knowledge of the basic principles of pharmacology, with special attention to the drugs used in neurologiacal disorders

Course contents

Pharmacokinetics : absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs

Main pharmacokinetic parameters : bioavailability, volume of distribution, AUC, Cmax, Tmax, clearance)

Pharmacodynamics : mechanisms of drug action, agonists, antagonists, relation between drug concentration and effect; the variability of response to drugs

Drug-drug interactions

Drug toxicity : classification of adverse drug reactions and principles of post-marketing drug surveillance

 

General principles of neurotransmission in central and peripheral nervous system

Drugs acting on autonomic and somatic motor nervous system : cholinergic agonists and antagonists; adrenergic agonists and antagonists; neuromuscular blocking agents

Drugs acting on the central nervous system : general anesthetics, local anesthetics, opioid analgesics, hypnotics and sedatives, antidepressant agents, antiepileptic agents, antipsychotic agents, drugs for degenerative diseases of CNS (Parkinson, Alzheimer)
