Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Moduli: Manuela Ferracin (Modulo 1) Massimiliano Bonafè (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Nursing (cod. 8473)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to understand the causes and pathogenic mechanisms of human diseases, and the etiology of structures, functions and control mechanisms alterations at several levels of integration. The students will learn the principles and biological basis of immune response regulation, including the pathophysiology of immune response impairement in major diseases.

Course contents

Cellular pathology: health and disease concepts, etiology and pathogenesis; cellular adaptations, reversible and irreversible cell injury: necrosis and apoptosis.

Inflammatory-reparative response: etiology and classification of acute inflammation, chemical mediators, vascular changes and exudate formation, cellular events and phagocytosis, systemic consequences and etiopathogenesis of fever; chronic and granulomatous inflammation, pathogenesis of tuberculosis; adult stem cells, reparative response: tissue repair and wound healing, fibrosis.

Immunology: cells and tissues of the immune system; innate and specific immunity; antigens; major histocompatibility complex; antigen processing and presentation; humoral and cell-mediated immune responses; antibody; complement; tolerance.

Immunopathology: Hypersensitivity Autoimmunity. Immunodeficiency syndrome. Graft rejection.

Oncology: the neoplastic cell; tumor classification; molecular genetics of cancer, oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes; tumor progression; metastatization; carcinogenesis; epidemiology and prevention.

Nutritional, genetic and environmental diseases: diseases caused by chemical or physical agents; nutritional disorders; obesity; aging; monogenic and complex genetic diseases.

General physiopathology: hemostasis and hemorrhagic diseases; risk factors of atherosclerosis, formation of atheromatous plaque and related consequences; thrombosis; embolism; infarction; hypoxia and cyanosis; oedema.

Teaching methods

Lectures (36 hours).

Assessment methods

Student learning will be checked at the end of the course through a test. The overall knowledge in immunology, pathology and general physiopathology will be assessed using multiple-choice questions.

Teaching tools

Teaching slides will be available on line (AMS Campus).
