Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has a conceptual and practical preparation to carry out the observation and monitoring of the oral cavity. He or she is able to recognize and use the instruments necessary to visit the patient's relation to the tasks of Dental Hygienist. In particular, the student is able to: - Observe the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity including the lips and perioral areas and recognize the normal anatomy and health tissues - He or She recognizes and knows how to properly use the instruments necessary for the intraoral examination. - He or She Knows and is able to detect the main clinical indexes. - He or She recognizes and knows how to properly use the instruments necessary for the detection of the main parameters related to health and dento-gingival diseases . - To know the times and the procedures for monitoring the patient. He or She knows and is able to fill in the medical record of competence of the dental hygienist.

Introduction to the course and to the dental specialities in the Department of Dentistry of Bologna
Anatomy of the oral cavity with reference to the dental hygienist needs
Anatomy of the macroscopic and microscopic structures of the teeth and the periodontium
Outline of the physiology of the tooth and hydrodynamic theory of the  sensitivity
The dental formula and the odontogenesis path  from the beginning to the tooth eruption
Teeth and dentition
Morphology of permanent teeth that are relevant for the dental hygienist
Morphology of deciduous teeth that are relevant for the dental hygienist
The furcation
Disorders of tooth crowns
Topics of general interest to the public, for educational purposes
The dental examination
