14041 - Biochemistry Lab-based Course (C2A)

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Docente: Anna Tinti
  • Credits: 1
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 8415)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the laboratory, the student knows methods and program interfaces useful to better understand the concepts learned in Chemistry and Biochemistry courses.

Course contents

Behaviour of different ions in water solution: metal ion, amphoteric ion, transition metal ions.

Reactions of complex ions formation. Redox reactions.

pH indicators and their color as a function of pH.

Strong acid-strong base titration using pH indicator to determine the equivalence point. Weak acid-strong base titration using the pH-meter to determine the equivalence point.

Graphical elaboration of the results (weak acid-strong base titration), and determination of the Ka of the weak acid.

Teaching methods

Practical laboratory with a small group of students will be performed after lessons explaining the theory, the use of the laboratory material and the safety rules for the use of chemicals.

Assessment methods

Written report on the laboratory experience.
