Exam session
The single examination session usually begins on 15 October and ends on 31 March of the following academic year. Exams cannot be sat prior to the end of the relative course unit, for the year of enrolment, with the exception of students on short programmes.
Each School provides for a minimum of six exam dates, appropriately distributed within the same exam session, at an interval of at least 15 days between one and the next. To ensure the best results for your learning path, the School may consider organising the exam sessions differently, as part of a teaching programme aiming to support students during their academic careers, including specific guidance services and tutoring.
- Students can sit an exam only if they are regularly enrolled (with the payment of the annual tuition fees), and if the exam is included in the student's study plan. In any case, the exam cannot be sat prior to the end of the relevant course unit, with reference to the enrolment year.
- If course attendance is mandatory, students can take the exam only after having obtained the relevant attendance certificate. Within no later than seven days after the end of the relevant learning activities, professors must notify the Student Administration Office in writing the names of the students allowed to sit the exam. If no notice is given, the attendance certificate is issued automatically to all students regularly enrolled to that academic year. If students want to complete their studies in a shorter period of time than normal (3 years for first cycle degree programmes, and 2 years for second cycle degree programmes), in conformity with the General Academic Regulations of the University, they should contact to the Student Administration Office.
- The final examination may be a written, oral or practical test. The final examination may take place individually or in groups. A group examination or test must assure the recognition and possibility to evaluate each candidate's contribution, relating to the implementation of specific projects, established and assigned by the professor in charge of the learning activity, or to the participation in research initiatives or experiments. In all cases, these activities aim to assess the student's knowledge and skills characterising the activity included in the curriculum.
The oral examinations are held in public session. For other examination methods, including on-line, the Schools ensure appropriate forms of advertising. - For special purposes, the Academic Senate, at the request of the School, may supervise the exams through videoconferencing.
Exam evaluation and record
For all study programmes, with the exception of some Specialisation Schools, the exams involve an evaluation which is expressed as a grade of out of 30, as duly registered on an electronic record-book. An exam is deemed to be passed successfully if the final grade is equal to or higher than 18/30. In the event of a full grade (30/30), the Examination Board may grant honours (lode).
- In the cases provided by the degree programme regulations, the grade may simply be expressed on a pass/fail basis.
- For integrated courses (exams covering more than one module or course unit) a single exam will be held and a final grade given.
- Learning credits are acquired only having passed the examination or any other kinds of programme assessment.
- Exams for which grades have already been recorded with a pass score cannot be repeated.
- A negative evaluation does not imply the allocation of a grade or mark, but merely an evaluation reported on the records (either "Withdrawn" or "Failed"): this evaluation is not included in the curriculum and does not affect the average of the final grade.
- The digital records, filled in by using the AlmaEsami system, must be completed by adding the digital signature of the Chairman of the Examination Board no later than 5 days following the exam or test date, or in the case of a written exam or test, within five days of the date of publication of the results.
- The paper exam records (in case of urgency), duly filled in and signed by the Chairman of the Examination Board must be sent to the relevant Student Administration Office within the same term of five days.
