Learning outcomes

Non-Italian mother tongue students are able to understand, analyse and produce long and complex spoken and written texts on both practical and abstract topics. They are also able to write, and present orally, clear and well structured texts on a wide range of topics, formulating the main information according to their own opinion. They are able to interact with Italian language speakers in a clear and articulated manner.

Course contents

The course aims to improve linguistic and communicative skills in Italian in order to understand, analyze and produce coherent and complex specialized written texts (but also oral speeches) of different genres and types. The in-depth study of grammatical issues is functional to the activities and texts (written and oral) selected for the course. During the course, various general topics will be addressed, to improve the mastery of linguistic structures. to broaden the lexicon, raising awareness about linguistic uses and develop writing and oral skills. Some of the topics may concern: society, environment, tourism, nutrition, arts, fiction for children, food and wine and culture.

Teaching methods

The lectures include the analysis of written and oral texts selected by the teacher to highlight the linguistic structure, uses, communicative functions and textual and discursive organization. The lessons will have a laboratory character, for which the active participation of all students in the proposed exercises is required, an element that will also be taken into consideration for the purposes of the final evaluation.

Attendance is compulsory at 70%.

Assessment methods

The exam includes an individual dossier (written and oral productions) and an oral test. The teacher will monitor the gradual progress of each student through the individual correction of the texts assigned. For the purposes of the evaluation, the dossier containing the written and corrected productions during the course will be taken into consideration. The dossier must be submitted at least one week before the oral exam.

  • Written tests (dossier):  for the evaluation, both grammatical correctness and expressive and textual skills will be taken into consideration. The use of the dictionary is not allowed;
  • Oral exam is a commentary on a topic dealt with during the course and established by the teacher.

It is necessary to have submitted the Dossier to be able to access the oral test. The final grade will be calculated based on the average of both tests.
