  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Forli
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in International relations and diplomatic affairs (cod. 8048)

Learning outcomes

The objective of this Laboratorio is to provide the essential elements that allow the understanding of the European economic integration process, analyzing the most important policies over the last sixty years and in particular the migration issue. In addition, students will be asked to prepare themselves on each of the topics that will be covered so as to actively participate in the discussion. Finally, the class will be involved in the examination of bibliographic and archival material/tools which can be useful for writing research papers in this discipline.

Course contents

This laboratorio is made of several elements. The central part will focus on the economic history of European integration since the post-World War II period and analyze the steps taken to reach the integration of markets and currency in the European Union. Particular attention will be devoted to fiscal, monetary (particularly the role of the Central Bank since 2008) and especially migration policies. All of this will be done with a view to stimulating active students' participation so as to make these meetings a real laboratory of new ideas for the study of the EU.

The workshop then will also focus on the sources for research: where and how to get quality information on the European Union, which are the main websites and what documents are available, how to read and interpret primary sources. The activity will be properly laboratory-based and will directly involve students, who will be invited to work online, retrieve material, and try to interpret documents.

Finally, students are invited to choose 3 seminars out of 8 offered on migration issues by renowned scholars  and attend them in November/December, the program is on line on Virtuale.

Readings/Bibliography

The students will be provided with an in-depth bibliography for each topic covered in class. The reference text is: Francesca Fauri, The European Union, an Economic History, Il mulino, Bologna, 2017 and articles uploaded on virtuale.

Teaching methods

To best support the student's learning process  each lecture will address a specific issue, the content of which is available to students from the beginning of the course. During the lectures, students will be encouraged to intervene and disscuss the topics in class. Students will also be shown how to move around the EU website to find the most up-to-date information, discussion will also be stimulated by reading original EU documents.

Assessment methods

The assessment of learning will be based on the commitment in class and  a short multiple-choice test to be taken during the exam period at the end of the Laboratorio.

Attendence is mandatory, as for all laboratori.
