97178 - Endoscopic Lesions of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Moduli: Giovanni Barbara (Modulo 1) Leonardo Henry Umberto Eusebi (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 9210)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the students will be able to recognise the diverse endoscopic lesions of the lower and upper gastrointestinal-tract. they will also become confident with the different techniques of endoscopic treatment, and the management of patients who undergo routine and emergency endoscopic colonoscopies.

Course contents

Endoscopy plays a major role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal and pancreato-biliary tract. In particular, the evolution of the endoscopic techniques has allowed to obtain early diagnoses of GI cancers through screening programs and to perfor increasingly less invasive treatments, reducing the need for surgical interventions burdened by greater morbidity and mortality.

Digestive endoscopy is also the first approach method for diagnosing digestive acute bleeding of both the upper and lower GI tract, allowing their treatment through different endoscopic haemostasis techniques.

The distinction and recognition of the different endoscopic lesions will allow the student to have a 360 degree view of the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, incrrasing their knowled by integrating the endoscopic diagnostic aspect with notions on the pathogenesis, management and treatment of different GI lesions.

MODULE 1: At the end of module 1 the students will be able to recognise the diverse endoscopic lesions of the lower gastrointestinal tract. They will also become confident with the different techniques of endoscopic treatment, and the management of patients who undergo routine and emergency colonoscopies.

MODULE 2: At the end of module 2 the students will be able to recognise the diverse endoscopic lesions of the upper gastrointestinal and pancreato-biliary tract. They will also become confident with the different techniques of endoscopic treatment, and the management of patients who undergo routine and emergency gastroscopies and biliary endoscopies (ERCP and EUS).

Teaching methods
