Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will learn methodological, theoretical and empirical skills for planning, design, simulation and performance evaluation of integrated public transport services in urban areas, with particular focus on sustainable mobility paradigms.
Course contents
- Characteristics of public transport systems elements (arcs and nodes): capacity, performances, efficiency
- Public transport networks supply models: line-based and run-based supply models, stop models.
- Transit path choice and assignment models: user path choice models, hyperpaths, frequency-based and schedule-based assignment for high-frequency services.
- Frequency and timetable design methods.
- Urban transit systems in ITS era: relationship between transport systems and ICT, with special focus on ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), open data and real time data; technologies for public transport management and integration (advanced communications systems; automatic vehicle location; advanced traveller information systems; electronic payment systems, fleet management sytems)
- Public transport systems integration: physical integration and service integration of transit systems, Mobility as a Service (MaaS) concept, sustainable urban mobility and public transport services integration.
- Exercises, seminars, case studies.
Readings/Bibliography
Lecture notes and slides.
Suggested book:
- Cascetta, E. "Transportation Systems Analysis. Models and Applications", Ed. Springer
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons, seminars and exercises.
Assessment methods
Written exams, consisting of theoretical and practical questions. The objective of the evaluation is to assess contents knowledge and learning through the analysis of public transportation systems elements and the ability to cope with design problems.
