Learning outcomes

Concepts and methodologies for studying electrical circuits in both sinusoidal and transient operations. Students will be capable of programming, in the framework of commercial software, the remote control both of single instruments and entire automated measurement set-ups and to operate with the main components and instrumentation in the laboratory.

Course contents

AC circuits

Definition of amplitude, radian frequency and phase of sinusoidal quantities. Definition of phasors. Transformation from the time domain to the frequency domain: resistor, capacitor and inductor and RLC circuit. Series and parallel resonance. Power in AC circuits: definition of average, reactive, apparent and complex power. Power factor correction.

Transient response in electric circuits

Causes of a transient. Energy conservation principle. First order circuits: RC circuits (natural and step response), RL circuits (natural and step response). Second order circuirs; RLC circuit response. Definition of resonant frequency and damping factor. Analysis of the overdamped, critically damped and underdamped cases. General method for transient analysis in the time domain

Digital Multimeter (DMM)

Instrument fundamentals and general architecture. Input conditioning network, ranges, integration time, sensitivity. Input equivalent circuit. DC voltage measurement. DC current and resistance measurement. Use of the digital multimeter for AC measurements. Main parameters and specifications in DMM datasheets. Uncertainty evaluation.

Digital Wattmeter

Instrument fundamentals and general architecture. Voltage measurement. Main parameters and specifications in the datasheets. Measurement of electrical active and reactive powers, and power factor.

Sensors and Transducers for Industrial and Automotive Applications

Sensors for dimensional and strain measurement. Sensors for mechanical quantities (torque, force, power, velocity). Sensors for temperature and flow rate measurement.

Main components and instrumentation

Resistors, inductors, capacitors, breadboard, DC supply, multimeter, function generator, oscilloscope.

Teaching methods

Three strongly integrated Units: the first is carried out through lectures and a part in the laboratory; the second consists in laboratory activity involving the implementation of LabVIEW-controlled, automated measurement set-ups; the third and last one is also carried out in the laboratory and consists in realizing electric circuits and their study in steady-state, sinusoidal and transient operations.

As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend Module 1, 2 on Health and Safety online.

Written Exam (1st Module); Oral exam (possible practical verification in laboratory – 2nd Module); Laboratory Exam (3rd Module).
