Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students will have achieved the necessary tools to critically elaborate the main themes and aspects relating to design problems in a semiotic perspective.

Course contents

Semiotic study of objects is a (relatively) recent academic field: the course aim is to guide students to deal with most important contemporary theories about objects - or more in general about artifacts - in semiotics.

The course will present and critically discuss models and ideas proposed by Algirdas Julien Greimas, Jean Marie Floch, Bruno Latour, Michela Deni and Umberto Eco, but in the same time it will give to the students specific tools about a meta-semiotic gaze on the design conception of a project, focusing especially on theories by Zingale (2012) and Deni and Proni (2008).

Teaching methods

The course is articulated in frontal lessons with presentations and other materials that will be made available to students through Virtuale.unibo.it.

Students are expected to participate actively to class discussion.

Assessment methods

The exam will consist of an analytical paper, written in small groups, based on the instruments provided during the course.
