Online lessons and exams

How to join a virtual classroom to attend online classes or sit an exam.

How to attend online lessons

Most of the lectures held by the University of Bologna are delivered online, via the Microsoft Teams platform.

For each of the course units that have adopted this mode, a virtual classroom has been set up where you can attend the lessons.

You can access the virtual classroom:

  • from the homepage of the website of your degree programme, in the “Most viewed” section, click on “Online lessons” and select the course unit you want to attend;
  • from the "Teaching" page of the lecturer's website: if a teaching activity is online, a button labelled "Online lessons" will appear, providing access to the virtual classroom;
  • from the course structure diagram of the Degree Programme: when accessing the page of an activity, the "Online lessons" button will also appear on the right-hand side of the screen.

In both cases, clicking on the "Online lessons" button will display a page asking you which mode you want to use Teams in:

We recommend that you always use the app by choosing the "app desktop" option, as it offers more features than the web version. If you decide to use the web option, which does not require installation, you will have to use Chrome.

Microsoft Teams is also available for Mac OS X computers and for Android and IOS mobile devices.

Once Teams has started, you will be presented with a screen like the one below.

Important: you will have to select the option “For a better experience Sign In” (at the bottom of the page), do not click on “Join now” because you would then be an external guest and external guests are not allowed for online lessons.

At this point you will be asked to enter your credentials and you can access the virtual classroom.

Please keep your webcams and microphones switched off so that lectures can be delivered in an orderly manner without disturbances and overloading of the system.

  • for exams requiring the use of pen and paper, students must install a free app on their smartphone with which they can scan their paper and save it as a single document (PDF format recommended), which they must then send to the teacher following the upload procedure described below, using the institutional email address (;
  • you need to be by yourself in a well-lit room;

When the time is up, put down your pen and stop writing. At the teacher’s request, show each sheet of the paper you have written via webcam.

  • Open the scanner software on your smartphone and take pictures of each sheet of the paper, creating a single file for your exam, called Surname.pdf or Surname.jpg.
