Abstract
This research project analyses the social history of the Italian community in Egypt from 1864 to 1937 using a distinctive microhistorical and subalternist approach attentive to the articulation of local and supra-local dynamics. The project aims to question the connection between migrations, ethnicity and nation-building in the specific context of the Mediterranean region. It focuses on transnational identity of migrants, to understand how their perceptions of belonging and performance of identity have evolved and redefined themselves over time in response to local, national, and international historical-political phases. Adopting a micro-historical perspective to situate transnationalism, this study will examine the processes through which migrants negotiated their multiple identities within the local context and appropriated their nationality as a positional resource under the Capitulations. Particular attention will be given to their interactions with other local and foreign communities living in the country. The research will be premised on the retrieval and proposed enhancement of a very specific set of sources which are not easily accessible to researchers at present, the civil and penal cases of the Italian Consular Courts of Cairo and Alexandria held by the Archivio Storico Diplomatico of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (hence ASDMAE) in Rome. The broader objectives of the project are twofold: on the one hand, to engage in a rich theoretical conversation on the meaning and changing practices of "vernacular cosmopolitanism" by exploring a historically situated case study (Egyptian colonial cosmopolitanism under capitular jurisdiction), and on the other hand, to write a subaltern history of the Italian Community of Egypt from a transnational perspective. The specific archival and technological objectives of the project will be the preparation of an inventory, a catalogue and a digital platform of the documents, to make the collection accessible to research and to spread knowledge of its historical relevance far beyond the research community. PROJECT RESULTS The archival output of the project consisted in the retrieval and enhancement of a specific corpus of fonds, the documents produced by the Italian Consulates of Cairo and Alexandria of Egypt, in the post-Unitary period, from 1864 to 1937 stored in the repository the ASDMAE, the Historical and Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. These documents were are already open public but the lack of a comprehensive inventory made their consultation and use for research very difficult. The enhancement project therefore aimed at making the fonds more research friendly and accessible. It consisted in the reconditioning of the sources, the preparation of an inventory, its digitization and creation of an archival database on the AtoM open-access software Benvenuti - VERNACOSM - Archivi consolari egiziani eventually integrated within the project’ website https://site.unibo.it/vernacosm/it in such a way to enable scholars and non-specialists alike to explore, compare and connect archival materials in novel ways. As far as the scientific results of the project are concerned, the first output of historical analysis of a selected corpus of sources among the fonds object of the archival enhancement work were the following OA publications: Biancani F., Carminati L. (eds), Gendered Cosmopolitanism in Colonial and Semi- Colonial Egypt, Afriche e Orienti Special Issue, 27/1, 2024 (Publication January 8, 2025). For a Shared History of Cosmopolitanism through the Salvage of Endangered Archives: the VERNACOSM Project and the Enhancement of the Fonds of Cairo and Alexandria Consulates (1864-1937), pp. 103-119 in Hala Bayoumi and Basma Makhlouf Shabou (Eds), Navigating Digital Technologies for the GLAMs in the Arab World, Paris, Éditions HD, 2026. The preliminary findings of the project were presented to various audiences during the project and socialized among the relevant professional communities in a number of national and international conferences and symposia. In particular, the dissemination activities culminated in an Egyptian tour of invited lectures at ANAS- Dante Alighiera, Cairo, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, CEDEJ and IFAO. This was particularly important because the project team had the chance to present its work to very diverse audiences, ranging from present-day members of the small historical community of Italians of Egypt to Egyptian and foreign researchers and the general public alike.
