MIUR Department of excellence

As part of the Departments of excellence initiative, the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) has awarded a special grant to the best departments of Italian universities to finance five-year development projects.

In this regard, the 2017 Italian Budget Law introduced a special section in the Fund for the ordinary financing of universities, which is dedicated to this initiative.

A total of 180 “Excellent Departments” have been recognised in Italy. The selected 14 Departments of the Alma Mater will receive funding worth €113.8 million over a period of five years. This funding scheme, which aims to reward excellence, makes the University of Bologna the university that has been awarded the highest number of excellent departments: in fact, it will receive 8.4% of the total funding made available by the Ministry.

Each Department has developed projects with different kinds of intervention (staff recruitment, infrastructures, rewarding and highly qualified teaching activities, etc.) with the aim of achieving a significant improvement in the quality of research and in scientific, organisational and didactic planning abilities over the five-year period, also with reference to the aims of the “Industry 4.0” national plan.
