QS Ranking: 22 subjects taught at the University of Bologna are in the world's top 100 and 13 are number one in Italy
In this year's edition of this high-profile international ranking, the University of Bologna sits in position number one in the two macro-fields, Arts & Humanities and Life Sciences & Medicine, in Italy. Moreover, Unibo makes it to the world's top 50 with four subjects.
The 2021 QS World University Rankings by Subject places Unibo in the world's top 100 with 22 subjects - one subject more than last year. Four of these 22 subjects sit in the world's top 50: Classic & Ancient history (20th), Dentistry (39th), Modern Languages (40th) and Agriculture & Forestry (44th).
If we consider the overall result, the University of Bologna improved its ranking in all four disciplinary macro-fields. It is among the best 100 universities in the world in the following macro-fields: Arts & Humanities (53rd), Social Sciences & Management (75th) and Life Sciences & Medicine (90th). But the University of Bologna is doing well also in other fields such as Natural Sciences (107th worldwide climbing five positions) and Engineering & Technology (115th worldwide climbing four positions).
In Italy, Unibo is number one in the fields of Arts & Humanities and Life Sciences & Medicine. If we look at each subject in the ranking, we find that Italy leads the way 13 times: History, Linguistics, Modern Languages, Theology Divinity & Religious Studies, Agriculture & Forestry, Dentistry, Chemistry, Geography, Communication & Media Studies, Education, Law, Sports, Statistics.
"These results corroborate the strength of a central feature of our University: the high quality of all fields of knowledge", says Rector Francesco Ubertini. "It represents a marker of our identity that is increasingly benefitting from the large investments in training, research and student services of the last few years, and, of course, from the great commitment and know-how of our researchers and teaching staff".
The methodology followed by QS World University Rankings by Subject encompasses four sources, which are combined and weighted for each discipline. The four components of the rankings are Academic Reputation, i.e. the academic prestige of universities in the world; Employer Reputation, i.e. how employers evaluate graduates they recruit; Citations per Paper, i.e. the scientific impact of research of this or that university; H-index, i.e. a way of measuring both the productivity and impact of the published work of researchers.
