Competitive research funding: Unibo first university in Italy

24 mln euro and 54 research projects in 2019. Since the start of Horizon 2020, the University of Bologna managed to attract more than 100 mln euro of funding with more than 270 funded projects.

Research funding

According to the latest data (available online), in 2019 the University of Bologna was the first University in Italy and among the first ones in Europe in terms of European funding for competitive research.

The Alma Mater did pretty good in 2018 as well, when it saw the funding for national and international research doubled compared to the previous years.

In 2019 it did even better, especially at the European level. From the launch of Horizon 2020, in 2014, till now, the University of Bologna managed to get more than 100 mln euro with over 270 funded projects. Well before the end of Horizon 2020, the Alma Mater exceeds expectations with reference to its performance in the previous research programme of the European Community, the "Seventh framework programme for research and technological development" (operative from 2007 to 2013), in which it obtained 87.8 mln euro.

In 2019 alone the University of Bologna saw 54 of its projects approved with more than 24 mln euro worth of funding. This makes it the first university in Italy for European funds. At the European level, Unibo is number 33 in the overall chart, and number seven with reference to the "Societal Challenges" pillar, which regards collaborative research.

If we look at this pillar chart since the launch of Horizon 2020, the University of Bologna is now the first university in Italy and number 16 in Europe. In these regards, Unibo's results within the field "Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine, Maritime and Inland Water Research and the Bioeconomy" are worth mentioning. Here, the Alma Mater collected more than 17 mln euro for the funding of 43 projects and this makes it the first university in Italy and the fourth in Europe. Again first position in Italy (and tenth in Europe) within the framework “Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials”, in which the University of Bologna had 14 projects funded with more than 5 mln euro. Finally, Unibo, with its 16 funded projects and more than 5 mln euro funding, is number one nationally and number six in Europe also in the framework “Europe in a Changing World: Inclusive, Innovative and Reflective Societies”.
