How to use the library services.

 

Enrolment

To use the services of borrowing, inter-library lending and document delivery you must be enrolled.

Who may enrol? University students and persons of age (over 18).
What to do: fill in the form at the lending desk. You will need the following documents:

  • badge (for Bologna University students)
  • valid proof of identity
  • tax code or health card


Consultation in the library

On-the-spot consultation of hard-copy and online resources is open to all who wish, except in so far as there may be user-license limitations.
The library collections are arranged on open shelving for direct access by readers.

There are 28 places for readers, 4 of them equipped for portable computers. There are also 2 PC workstations for online consultation of publications and using the Internet. To use them one first obtains authentication by one’s university username and password. A newspaper service is available in the reading room near the library.


Borrowing

The user can borrow the majority of the books of the library according to the new rules of the University loan regulation.

For the library users are active the following services through the online catalogue: request, booking, loan renewal.

Not on loan: periodicals, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, multimedia materials, works with detachable sheets or maps enclosed, works from the CONS section, works in a bad state of repair and any other material the library deems unsuitable for lending. Items that may not be borrowed are marked in the catalogue as “consultation only”.


Inter-Library Loan

The service is open: during library opening hours; remote access 24/7 (round the clock).

Orders from our own users

Who is entitled to the service? University students and faculty.
What may one order? 2 texts that city libraries do not possess.
What to do: orders should be sent by e-mail to Not for inter-library loan: periodicals, materials for on-the-spot consultation only.
Cost: the service is free of charge for orders from Bologna University libraries. With all other libraries the cost of sending the items will be charged, and the lending library charge may have to be refunded.

Orders from other libraries

Who is entitled to the service? All Italian libraries of cultural institutions or associations outside the municipal area which engage in the same service; orders from private individuals are not accepted.
What may one order? 2 texts for 30 days.
What to do: orders should preferably be e-mailed to . Not for inter-library loan: periodicals, materials for on-the-spot consultation only, multimedia material and textbooks.
Cost: the service is free of charge for orders from Bologna University libraries and for libraries on the free mutual exchange scheme, while for other libraries the cost of sending the items will be charged.

If the borrowed item is lost, damaged or stolen, the reader must make good the loss with another copy of the same edition, or a different edition provided it is of the same scientific and commercial worth.


Document Delivery

The service is open: during library opening hours; remote access 24/7 (round the clock).

Orders from our own users

Who is entitled to the service? University students and faculty.
What may one order? Articles from periodicals or chapters from books that city libraries do not possess, and that are unavailable from University online resources.
What to do: register on the NILDE online service, then send a NILDE form for every item ordered. Cost: the service is free of charge, except for refund of expenses when demanded by the lending library.


Orders from other libraries

Who is entitled to the service? All libraries outside the municipal area that are on the mutual exchange scheme. Orders from private persons are not accepted.
What may one order? Articles from periodicals or chapters from books; delivery is by NILDE, by fax or first-class post, within the bounds of the authors’ copyright law (Law n. 633 dated 22/4/1941 and changes/supplements thereto). The request may be for the purposes of research or private study only.
What to do: orders should preferably be made through NILDE; libraries that do not belong to NILDE network may e-mail
Cost: the service is free of charge to Bologna University libraries and members of NILDE, as well as those on the mutual free exchange scheme; other libraries will be asked to refund delivery expenses.

 

Bibliographical research

The librarians will gladly help with bibliographical research, preferably in the morning and by appointment.

Reproduction, scanning and printing

Users may photocopy and scan material from the library, within the bounds of the authors’ copyright law (Law n. 633 dated 22/4/1941 and changes/supplements thereto).
In the space adjacent to the library, a multi-function machine is available for photocopying, self-service printing and scanning. It works by €5 prepaid cards on sale from the automatic vendor at the Laboratori Sartori building.


Wireless network

The library is connected to the University wireless network.
4 workstations have electric sockets for portable computers.
