The Project

COST Action FP1003 “ BIOMATPACK” is a European network of universities, research organizations and industrial partners engaged in the forest sector and  focused on the development of packaging solutions based entirely on renewable resources. Its aim is to remove the serious disadvantages associated with current paper and board packaging products that still heavily rely on non renewable materials to improve their barrier and mechanical properties.
The Action wants to explore the possibilities that the forest sector itself can offer as a raw material base for different components within a given package, with particular attention to the use of cellulose micro and nano-fibers; it addresses and analyze possible solutions from a sustainability point-of-view thus taking into account the total packaging value chain. That is why BIOMATPACK is not only focused on materials production and development but also addresses research in other fields such as value chain efficiency, end-of-life and supply of raw materials. In this concern BIOMATPACK is an opportunity for the forest sector value chain to advance towards the strategic objective of reducing environmental impact and to consequently increase its importance in contributing to future European policy.
