Learning outcomes

The student knows the advanced techniques for language service provision in one or more professional settings; s/he is able to analyze and critically assess language services in one or more professional settings and suggest improvement strategies; s/he is able to acquire further skills related to linguistics, translation and technology, as well as other disciplines of relevance to her/his studies, through interaction with professionals from a range of fields.

Course contents

The course aims to deepen students' linguistic and cultural knowledge and translation skills for translation between Russian and Italian in the publishing field, particularly in the field of essays on translation theory.
Significant works in the history of thought on translation in Russia and recent texts dealing with the evolution of the discipline will be translated in order to obtain a collection dedicated to this topic.
The essays in Italian will have to be ready for publication, so special care will be taken in terms of style and formatting.
The translations will be discussed during the seminar lectures, taking care to solve terminological problems together.

Teaching methods

Student attendance is compulsory (at least 70%). The course includes both seminars and theoretical reflection. All students will be asked to participate in collective discussion, which will be a fundamental method to strengthen students' awareness of their skills. During classes, students will be asked to read, analyse and contextualize texts before starting the translation process.
Translation techniques will be discussed from the point of view of strategies to be applied to produce good quality 'translation' aimed at a specific target readership.


Assessment methods

The exam will consist of a translation task to be delivered to the teacher as individual work. The translation should be prepared at home and submitted by e-mail (francesca.biagini7@unibo.it).

The mark of the examination is expressed out of thirty - the pass markis 18/30 and the highest mark is 30/30, according to the ECTS Grading Scale:

A [≈ 30/30 – 30/30 e lode]: outstanding performance with only minor errors;

B [≈ 27/30 – 29/30]: above the average standard but with some errors;

C [≈ 24/30 – 26/30]: generally sound work with a number of notable errors;

D [≈ 21/30 – 23/30]: fair but with significant shortcomings;

E [≈ 18/30 – 20/30]: performance meets the minimum criteria;

F [≈ 15/30 – 17/30]: Fail – some more work required before the credit can be awarded;

FX [≈ 0/30 – 14/30]: Fail – considerable further work is required.
