Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing an adequate knowledge of the structure and its historical evolution of the International sporting system; the role and action of the UE in sport; the idea of Europe in international sport; the link between sport and identity and the political and diplomatic use of sport by nation state.

Course contents

The course is organized in lectures and seminars, as detailed in the following program. The first part, is organized in frontal lessons, and focus on the relations between sport and International politics and its historical evolution. A specific attention will be dedicated to the role of European Union in the sport arena and on the political use of sport by governments.

The second part, aim to provide occasions for in-depth discussions of class materials and exercises. The seminars will focus on some case studies, on the relation between sport and war, on the political and diplomatic use of the mega-sporting events and on sport’s boycotts throughout history. Furthermore, due to its coincidence with the event, this year's course will pay special attention to the political significance of the Men's FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022.

Assessment methods

For attending students class participation will be taken into account, and as final assesment it will be required a paper related to a topic discussed in class in agreement with the professor.

For not attending students there will be an oral exam on the previously agreed program.
