Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student: knows the main techniques of data mining and qualitative analysis with CAQDA (Computer AssistedQualitative Data Analysis Software) tools; knows the software NVivo's main features regarding the text, content analysis and social media resources.

Course contents

The course aims to introduce students to the main concepts and tools of computer-assisted qualitative research, also known as CAQDA (Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software).
To this end, after a theoretical introduction to the strengths and weaknesses of the main tools available, we will analyse the functionalities and specificities of the NVIVO software as one of the most widely used in the sector.
During the semester, the class will have the opportunity to carry out laboratory activities and produce a research report through and extraction and analysis of data collected personally or at the teacher's suggestion.

The reference text is:

Coppola L. (2011); NVivo: un programma per l'analisi qualitativa (La cassetta degli attrezzi), Franco Angeli, Milan.

Students will receive complete handouts and multimedia resources during the course according to their digital skills.

Teaching methods

The course will be conducted mainly in laboratory mode.

Introductory lectures will aim to explain to students how to understand the processes of data gathering, processing and analysis.

Students will work on project construction and data analysis during the lectures.

Assessment methods

The final exam will consist of an exercise in which the candidate has to produce a research report. The activity requirements must be the input of digital sources and their analysis through the main features offered by the NVIVO software.

Teaching tools

Computer, projector, and internet connection are the minimum requirements for the course.

During the semester, Youtube tutorials will help students in their activities.

(Concerning equipment, students who prefer not to use their laptops will be able to make use of devices in the laboratory and the ALMAWIFI connection)
