Learning outcomes
The seminar presents the main artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, and discusses AI risks and opportunities. In particular, it introduces the main approaches for the development of intelligent systems: a) knowledge representation and automated reasoning, b) machine learning (supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning), and c) robotics (embodied AI). The topic of algorithmic decisions making is investigated, by examining limits, standards for efficiency and ethics (accuracy, fairness, non-discrimination, transparency). Finally, beneficial uses of AI are illustrated, with particular reference to the protection of rights. Examples of applications in the field of contract analysis, consumer protection and data protection are introduced.

- For students attending the seminar (frequentanti), the detailed course content corresponds to the list of readings and materials with the possibility of replacing some contents with new topics discussed during the lectures.
The seminar is divided into two parts: AI technologies; AI risks and opportunities
AI technologies: the enablers; main approaches and methods.

Teaching methods
Lectures are held by Prof. Lagioia with the support of collaborators.
I warmly invite the students to actively participate in the lectures and discuss with teachers and other students news and events, related to the topics of the seminar.
During the seminar the students will have a chance to attend different conferences held by professors and professional lawyers on the topics of this course.
In accordance with the health emergency from Covid-19, teaching will be carried out following the traditional method of lectures. The possibility of taking online courses is always ensured.

Assessment methods
The exam consists in an individual and/or a group activity.
Individual or Group activity: Students are required to make a small project, individually or as member of a group (max 4/5 students), depending on the number of students attending the seminar. Each student/group chooses a topic from a list. The list of topics will be defined during the course. Each student/group must communicate to francesca.lagioia@unibo.it the following information:
- the chosen topic
- a brief description (max 1000 characters) about the tentative proposal
- group members’ name
This will be useful to arrange the scheduling of presentations that will be published on the course webpage.
In order to maintain a good variety in the scheduling and only in the case several students or groups submit similar proposals, they may be required to change the object of the presentation.
IMPORTANT: each student/group will prepare a presentation of the proposal and every student in the group must present part of it.
This activity will be evaluated.
2) Oral test: students who have passed the group activity (min 18/30) can take the oral test. The test will take place on Microsoft Teams.
The oral test consists of two or three questions that may cover the entire content of the course.
In the oral test, the student starts with the grade obtained in the group activity, to which a maximum of 3 points may be added, and it may also lead to reducing the grade from the group activity.
Teaching tools
All the seminar information and materials (e.g., slides, readings, list of topics) will be made available on Virtuale.
