Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes - At the end of the course the students should be able to: know and use the most relevant tools of sociological analysis of economic life with specific reference to: - the concept of care regime, its transformations and implications on the relationship between production and social reproduction; - the main dynamics of care work transformation in the context of renovation of the contemporary work’s world.

Course contents

The recent pandemic crisis has given visibility to a distinctive element of contemporary capitalism, the coexistence and strong link between the "crisis of work" and "crisis of care". Starting from this broad problematic issue, the course intends:

provide the main elements to understand, starting from a multiple and polysemic work vision, the way in which the relationships between the social organization of productive and reproductive processes have historically changed and the contradictions that this has generated in terms of emancipatory potential, social well-being, environmental protection;

provide analysis tools to grasp the main transformations of the care regimens: modalities, different in the different historical and spatial contexts, through which cooperation and the social division of labor are organized and the responsibilities of care are socially regulated and distributed between genders, generations, natives and immigrants, public and private spheres;

provide tools for analyzing the main characteristics and the most recent transformations in care work, in a broad sense (International Labor Organization, 2018) which includes health care, education, social assistance, care for frail people, children and the elderly etc., carried out in the form of employment in public and private organizations or in domestic contexts, paid and unpaid;

promote reflection on questions concerning a recomposition of the link between work and care in a perspective that focuses on the interdependence between people and between people and the wider context of life

It will produce excellent valuations: the ability to deepen and put into connection with each other the main issues addressed in the course; the use of appropriate language with the specific nature of the discipline.

It will produce discrete valuations: mnemonic knowledge of contents and partial ability to link the themes covered; the use of appropriate language.

It will produce sufficient valuations: a minimal body of knowledge on the topics covered; the use of inappropriate language.

It will produce negative valuations: lack of guidance within the themes addressed in the exam readings and training gaps; the use of inappropriate Language.
