Learning outcomes

The student knows the strategies, techniques, traditional and state-of-the-art tools and methods used in specialized translation tasks; s/he is able to apply them to the translation of texts for the publishing industry from different genres and text types, from Spanish into Italian, meeting specific translation briefs and respecting the communicative functions of the source texts; s/he knows the main techniques required for information mining, drafting, editing and revising texts, including the overall quality evaluation of the translated text.

Course contents

By considering the concept of translation as a place of encounter and comparison between two different languages and cultures (in this case Spanish and Italian), the course aims to deepen students’ linguistic knowledge and translation competence in order to become autonomous professionals when faced with specialized texts in the publishing industry. Students will be able to employ skills and strategic translation methods in order to deal with any problems that may arise. The following arguments will be worked on in particular in the different modules:

1. Reflections on the theoretical and practical aspects of translation for the publishing industry. Analysis of the translation into Italian of C. Ruiz Zafón’s novels;

2. The translation of journalism: analysis and commentary of Spanish articles translated for the Italian press, translation of an opinion piece (A. Grandes El último gazpacho, El País, 12.09.2010);

3. Literary translation: analysis and translation of the an extract of L. G. Montero from his book Una forma de resistencia (2012);

4. The translation of children’s and adolescents’ literature: analysis and translation of prose and poetry of contemporary Spanish writers;

5. The children’s adaptation of Don Chisciotte;

6. The translation of children’s narratives: analysis of colloquial terms in the work of J.Á. Mañas; rendering the evaluative suffixation in Italian; the translation of extracts from Historias del Kronen (1994) and Mensaka(1995);

7. The translation of travel literature: analysis of the reporting style of R. Chirbes and the translation of a text from Mediterráneos (2008).

8. The translation of bio-graphic novel: Vida y muerte de Federico García Lorca di I. Gibson e Q. Palomo (2018)

The course content will be expanded on through participation in workshops organized by the Literary Translation Laboratory and by the Metra Centre in the Interpreting and Translation Department (DIT).

The 40 contact hours (6 ECTS) will be held in the first semester.

Teaching methods

Attendance is obligatory (70% minimum). As the course is tutorial-based, students are required to participate actively in the activities proposed during the lessons, and participation will be taken into account in the final assessment. There will be some introductory theoretical lectures on the programme modules. The basic teaching unit in practical translation will include the following phases: presentation of the source text (author, text type, potential audience and publishing context in Italy), a guided analysis of the source text, a translation brief (via Virtuale e-learning platform), individual correction, group revision, and final reflection.

As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend the online Modules 1, 2 on Health and Safety [https://www.unibo.it/en/services-and-opportunities/health-and-assistance/health-and-safety/online-course-on-health-and-safety-in-study-and-internship-areas].

Assessment methods

· At the end of the module, in order to demonstrate that the techniques of specialized translation for the publishing industry have been acquired, students will complete a translation for the publishing industry in one of the areas dealt with in class (students will choose the topic and advise the Professor ahead of time). The Professor will upload the text to be translated on Virtuale. and students will have a week to complete the translation and upload the completed version to Virtuale. The text will about 1000 words plus a student commentary on the text.

· By the end of the deadline, students will upload a separate dossier to Moodle containing the corrected translations and a final reflection taking into consideration the original text.

· The final grade will be based on the evaluation of the following components: a. the translation and commentary on the translation (70%) b. dossier (30%).

· Factors that will influence the final grade will be a. the level of understanding of strategies, techniques and translation methods in the publishing industry b. the quality of the translated text c. the ability to reflect on linguistic and translation factors at hand d. the ability to revise texts that have already been translated e. attention to overall layout.

Excellent level. The candidate possesses excellent translation/language skills, with a very high level of competence in the target language /(or) in the language and culture being studied.

Above average level. The candidate makes only minor errors, and shows a solid command of the required skills and competences.

Generally sound level. The candidate displays a number of shortcomings, indicating a reasonable command of the required skills and competences.

21-23

Adequate level. The candidate displays significant shortcomings and only an adequate command of the required skills and competences.

18– 20

Minim level. The candidate only meets the minimum level required and shows a minimal command of the required skills and competences.

< 18 Fail

The candidate’s does not meet the required standard and shows a wholly inadequate command of the required skills and competences.
