Learning outcomes

The objective of this seminar is both theoretical / methodological and practical. First, the seminar illustrates the main theoretical approaches employed to analyse the artistic and cultural lexicon in general and from an interdisciplinary perspective. Second, students will be guided in the application of these theories using digital humanities methods and tools. The seminar aims to improve the students’ professional skills within the fields of lexicography, editing, specialized translation, and communication.

Course contents

The aim of this seminar, which is multilingual (English, French, Spanish, Russian and Italian), is both theoretical/methodological and practical. Firstly, the seminar illustrates theoretical approaches to analysing artistic and cultural vocabulary in general and from an interdisciplinary perspective. Then, in the second part, students are directed towards an application of these theories through tools provided by humanistic computing. The student acquires transversal theoretical and professional skills in the fields of lexicography, publishing, specialised translation, and communication. Due to its specific content and theoretical and practical nature, this seminar is aimed at those interested in pursuing a career in communication and the promotion of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of cities of art and cultural events.




Teaching methods

PART 1 (10h): Introduction to the concept of Cultural Heritage in relation to vocabulary and discursive practices / The language of art between common language and language for special purposes / The vocabulary of cultural heritage in a multilingual and transversal perspective / Traditional and digital text types: artistic and technical manuals, reportage, travel books, tourist guides, promotional brochures, blogs.


PART 2 (10h): Introduction to the use of software for corpus exploration and linguistic data analysis (e.g. Sketch Engine) / Creation and analysis of comparable and parallel corpora / Study of vocabulary and terminology through semantic annotation of texts / Analysis of existing translations and/or translation practice.


PART 3 (10h): Practical workshop on applications in the field of cultural promotion and the tourism sector / Designing practical activities for the dissemination and promotion of the artistic heritage.

Assessment methods

Delivery of a written paper agreed with the teacher of the foreign language of reference to be chosen from: a) an essay, b) a translation test or c) the design of a communication project. Deadline: end of June 2023.
