Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student: - knows in general the historical evolution of music broadcasting techniques in the media, the production and distribution logic of the different media (radio, generalist television, thematic television, digital platforms); - also knows the structure as well as aspects related to production and reception of some television programmes of relevant historical interest.

Course contents

The course addresses from a historical perspective the use of music in audiovisual media, in particular in television. The historical and cultural contexts, ideological implications and production and consumption practices that characterise music in television will be illustrated.

The lectures will provide a map of the spaces allocated to music in generalist and thematic television, and will focus on the construction of the programme schedule. Basic analytical tools will also be provided and certain case studies will be addressed, in particular some music popularisation programmes between the 1960s and 1980s.
