94619 - Restoration and Preservation of Buildigns with Workshop

Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Moduli: Riccardo Gulli (Modulo 1) Giorgia Predari (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture and Building Engineering (cod. 0940)

Learning outcomes

Analysis of design trends in recovery and restoration; evaluation of deterioration and comparison between traditional and innovative construction techniques.

Course contents

The course is divided into educational modules related to each other and aimed at providing an integrated knowledge base in the context of the theme of interventions on built heritage, with an extensive investigation of technical-construction problems, those of architectural and functional redevelopment and improvement of energy performance. According to this orientation, the organizational structure of the teaching plan is modulated, divided into a theoretical part and an exercise part carried out in working groups.

1. THEORY

The interventions on the historical masonry construction in the seismic field.

The teaching module aims to provide the basic notions regarding the theoretical approach and technical intervention solutions for the recovery and maintenance of the historical building heritage, with specific reference to the topic of seismic prevention. The module is divided into two parts. The first focuses on highlighting the theoretical assumptions that inform and guide subsequent technical intervention choices. The discussion starts from a detailed analysis of the criteria on which the historical masonry concept is based, following a cognitive path that cuts across the theory and practice of pre-modern construction, through the exposition of some theoretical passages considered exemplary.

The second part is oriented towards the description of intervention methods for building restoration, following a theoretical and operational approach focused on the use of pre-modern seismic prevention techniques.

Intervention criteria and practices for the energy requalification of existing building.

The didactic module deals with the issue of the redevelopment of the building in terms of adaptation to the current requests for limiting energy consumption, with specific attention to highlighting the problems related to the adaptation to current performance standards and the criteria for evaluating the appropriateness of design solutions in terms of cost-benefits of the intervention.

Teaching methods

Lessons ex cathedra and design laboratory

The practical part will concern the design of a restoration intervention for a masonry building, within the category of seismic improvement and energy requalification.

Assessment methods

1. The individual assessment will focus on an oral interview on the topics covered in lectures in the relative didactic modules set out above.

2. The evaluation of the exercise work will focus on the presentation of the analysis and project documents according to the modalities that will be defined during the course.
