Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Philology, Literature and Classical Tradition (cod. 9070)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the workshop the student will be able to collect and organize complex information in a coherent way, and apply critical analysis methods to the linguistic sciences. (S)he will be able to identify a research issue, relevant to philological research, and possess the knowledge to identify it and appropriately use necessary sources of information in order to address it.

Course contents

"TraSLA" is divided up in two sections, Greek and Latin, helded by Federico Condello and Bruna Pieri respectively. Teachers will be both present during the whole course. Students attending "Filologia, Letteratura e Tradizione classica" Master Degree are supposed to translate both Greek and Latin Texts; Students attending "Italianistica, Culture letterarie Europee e Scienze linguistiche" can translate only Latin Texts (more texts will be added as a replacement of Greek ones).

The bulk of the course will consist in some translation workshops from Greek or Latin into Italian. Contents will be the same in both sections and will deal with the main issues of Translation Studies, such as:

  • the different targets of a professional translation: language teaching at school; academic research; editing classics; performing translated classical texts
  • "mistakes and faults" of a professional translation
  • peculiar challenges in translating from Greek and Latin into Italian

Readings/Bibliography

Literature and readings about the translation studies (and about the classical texts which will be translated) will be suggested during classes.

Pdf files containing the classical texts and / or further bibliography will be uploaded to the course website at the link "Materiali didattici"

As a general introduction to the main translation issues dealt with during the workshop, the following work is suggested: F. Condello-B. Pieri (a c. di), Note di traduttore, Bologna (Pàtron) 2011, con contributi di Gianfranco Agosti, Maria Paola Funaioli, Alfredo Morelli, Michele Napolitano, Andrea Rodighiero, Pietro Rosa, Renzo Tosi, Alfonso Traina

Teaching methods

Both the teachers will be present during classes; they will explain the main translation challenges starting from a short literary passage that students are supposed to translate later by themselves; the outcome of students' work will be discussed during the next class. The workshop is scheduled on a two hours per week schema. Attending the lessons is a mandatory requirement.

Assessment methods

Like for any other workshop, attendance at TraSLA works will be the starting point of the final evaluation.

At the end of the course there will be a viva voce examination during which the students will discuss with the teachers some of the problematical issues of their translations.
