92798 - Security Laboratory

Academic Year 2022/2023

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Forli
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Criminology for Investigation and Security (cod. 8491)

Learning outcomes

The course provides for a detailed study of theoretical and operational instruments, essential to analyze an organization from the point of view of people and property's security, in order to allowing the students to learn the different modalities of the approach to analysis and risk's evaluation, to understand the connection between property's features, dangers and adopting countermeasures, to know and use technologies and most recent control devices.

Those seminars should teach the correlation between video surveillance and public order, the analysis of biometrical systems related to identity's security, services' security and informatic systems' study, false documentary and the transports' security.

At the end of the course, the student know security technologies' operation and principal methodologies used for deviant events and criminal cases' study.

Course contents

The class will take place in the first semester (from september to december 2022).

Except in cases of future restrictions due to the pandemic, lessons are helded in classroom.

The first part of the lecture cycle will concern corporate security and, in particular, risk management, which is fundamental for the development of effective strategies to protect goods and people from criminal threats. In particular, the following topics will be discussed:

• Analysis of the concepts that underlie the security activity: security, safety, risk, threat, active and passive safety, emergency management. These concepts will be analyzed in a systemic perspective, according to which every element that contributes to the development of security plans can be fully effective only if placed in full interaction and integration with others.

• Notes on the evolution of security: how it was born and how it has evolved in relation to the evolution of economy and society, from pure physical protection to information security (computer security, o cybersecurity).

• The stages of identification, assessment and treatment of risks in corporate security. Risk management is a fundamental process for the development of effective security programs. The three phases of identification, quantitative and qualitative assessment and real risk management will then be analyzed, through the analysis and discussion of practical cases of corporate security.

The second part will concern the UNI ISO 31.000 standard on risk management: what the standard prescribes, what is the basic idea, how risk management is "thought" within an organization. This standard represents the reference point for every type of activity within a company, since each activity is intrinsically "risky".

The third part of the course will focus on some specific security issues, always in a practical-operational perspective, with the aim of applying the concepts acquired during the first two parts of the cycle of lessons to the reality of the facts. In particular, the following topics will be discussed:

• Analysis and discussion of some cases: modus operandi of the criminal, factors that facilitate the occurrence of criminal incidents, failings in the security system.

• Security in public events (events, concerts, parties, etc.) in light of the new legislation, with particular reference to terrorist threats.

• Emergency management: the ability of a company to "survive" a crisis is fundamental and involves all the professionals involved in it, since it must be treated at 360 degrees: organization, communication, image, legal aspects.

The course will have a practical and operational cut and will deal with specific cases, with the aim of reducing students as much as possible in the reality of corporate security.
