Learning outcomes

The student will become acquainted with the literary texts proposed in the seminar, acquiring very specific knowledge of different themes and problems of classical literature, of philological, literary, historical kind.

Course contents

Different Greek texts, verse and prose, from Homer down to the 1st-2nd century AD, will be read and discussed, with a special attention to their historical and literary contexts, to their critical editions, research tools, and the modern translations available. The apparatus criticus will be read and discussed in class, as well as the translations from different ages.

Course timetable: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 11-13 am, Serra Zanetti Room (Via Zamboni 32, 3rd floor).

Time of the course: 19 September 2022-28 October 2022 (1st semester).

Texts will be provided on Virtuale.

Teaching methods

A new text will be read and examined every day: the text will be read, translated, its critical apparatus will be read and understood, different translations will be compared, the main research tools will be introduced, and the students will deal with the various aspects of the text that must be taken into consideration. All these activities will involve the students directly.

Assessment methods

The oral examination will be an interview in which the teacher, through a series of questions, will test the theoretical knowledge and the theoretical-practical methodologies as explained during the lectures. In particular, the student will be invited to read a text (provided with a critical apparatus) different from those analyzed in class, to give a translation and to build up a research project on that text.

The candidate will pass the exam by proving to be able to read and analyse a Greek text. In this case, the evaluation will be «idoneo». In the opposite case, the evaluation will be «non idoneo».
