Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has the theoretical bases and the practical ability in the chemical laboratory that allow him to employ the volumetric, potentiometric, conductimetric, voltammetric and electroanalytical analytical techniques in general. The student knows how to tackle elementary analytical problems and how to choose and apply the most suitable technique and the most appropriate method for processing and performing statistical treatment of experimental data

Course contents

UNIT 1 - FRONTAL - 3 CFU (Prof. Jessica Fiori)
Prerequisites: basic elements of general and inorganic chemistry; acids and bases; type and characteristics of chemical reactions.
Volumetric analysis. Primary and secondary standards.
Neutralization titrations, determination of the end point (visual indicators, potentiometry)
Precipitation Titrations. Argentometry (Mohr, Vohllard, Fjians) Determination of the end point (visual indicators, potentiometry, conductivity).
Complexometric titrations, monodentate ligands and polyadentate ligands (chelating agents), titrations with EDTA. Determination of the end point (visual indicators).
Potenziometry: introduction, acid-base and precipitation titrations. Ion-selective electrodes. Glass electrode and operational measurement of pH.
Redox titrations, main oxidanting and reducing agents. End point identification (visual indicators, potentiometry).
Conductometry. Specific, equivalent, limit conductivity. Conductometric titrations

UNIT2 - LABORATORY - 1 CFU (Prof. Barbara Roda):

To attend the laboratory, it is requested that students have completed the compulsory course on safety at work and they have handed over to the teacher (or sent by e-mail to mara.mirasoli@unibo.it) a copy of the certificate of passing the final exam.

Each student is required to procure and wear the chemical lab coat.

Laboratory experiments:

- Standardization of a strong base with an acid primary standard

- Titration of a polyprotic acid with a strong base: identification of the end points by means of two chemical indicators or by potentiometry.

- Titration of bleach with thiosulphate (indirect iodometry) with starch indicator.

- Titration of ascorbic acid with iodine, with starch indicator (direct iodometry).

- Back titration of ascorbic acid with excess of iodine in the presence of iodate, with starch indicator.

- Complexometric titration for the determination of water hardness, with determination of the calcic and magnesium components.

- Titration of chloride ions with silver nitrate, Fajans method.

- Titration of Volhard.

UNIT 3 - EXERCISES - 2 CFU (Prof. Dora Melucci):

Statistics for analytical chemistry: Gauss distribution; confidence interval; significant figures; significance test; calibration of chemical-analytical methods: external standard method, standard addition method, internal standard method; quality parameters of a chemical-analytical measurement; propagation of technical and statistical errors. Creation of datasheets for experimental data processing.

Readings/Bibliography

Material: the material presented in class is made available to the student in electronic format on virtuale.unibo.it.

The course material and notes taken in class are essential for the exam, as well as one of the following texts:

Other university-level analytical chemistry texts can be freely chosen by the student.

Teaching methods

Lessons (held in parallel both for students present in the classroom and for students in teleconference) in which the course topics are presented and discussed, with explanatory numerical exercises executed at the blackboard. Practical tests.

Laboratory experiments.

Computer lab exercises for data processing.

Assessment methods

The assessment of learning takes place only through the final exam, which ensures the acquisition of knowledge and skills expected by conducting an oral interview and the resolution of numerical problems of the entire program.

The exam registration is required on Almaesami, in compliance with mandatory deadlines. Students are invited to unsubscribe if they are not interested in taking the examination. Cancellations must be made on Almaesami or, in alternative, by writing an email to the teacher at mara.mirasoli@unibo.it [mailto:mara.mirasoli@unibo.it] .

The evaluation criterion is based on the demonstration by the student to be able to use and apply the knowledge, information and cultural tools provided by the course, with discussion of the laboratory report. The threshold of sufficiency of learning is represented in particular by the demonstration of critical understanding and ability to discuss about the topics of the course, as well as the resolution of numerical problems.

The teacher is available for further clarification, and to verify the level of pre-exam preparation by appointment.

As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend Module 1, 2 [https://www.unibo.it/en/services-and-opportunities/health-and-assistance/health-and-safety/online-course-on-health-and-safety-in-study-and-internship-areas] online, while Module 3 on health and safety is to be attended in class or on Microsoft Teams according to the modality chosen by the teacher. Information about Module 3 attendance schedule is available on the website of your degree programme.
