Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows the safety and the toxic risk linked to drug therapy. The students knows the epidemiology of doping and the health risk of doping substances.

Course contents

Principles of Toxicology: Classification of the toxic effects. Risk-assessment for drug. Relationship between efficacy and toxicity of drugs.

List of substances and methods prohibited. Mechanism of action and toxic effects induced by doping substances: non-approvated substances; anabolic agents; peptide hormones; stimulants; narcotics. Substances included in the Monitoring Program.

Analysis of the health risks related to the abuse of drugs used to improve sports performance. Therapeutic Use Exemption.

Epidemiology of doping. Analysis of doping in various sports.

Teaching methods

Lectures with multimedia aids. The teaching material presented at the lectures is available on "Insegnamenti On Line" platform of the Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna.

Assessment methods

The exam will consist in a written test aimed at assessing the student's understanding and knowledge of the topics set out during the course.

The written test consists of:

-25 multiple choice questions. Each right answer will be awarded with 1 point, while wrong answers will be given -0,5 points.

-5 open-ended questions. Up to 1 point is assigned for each correct answer.

Examples and details will be shown during the lessons.

Students have up to 60 minutes to complete the written test.

The student will get a mark for each course unit (Hygiene and Safety of Sports Facilities 3 CFU - Toxicology and Prevention of Doping 3 CFU). The marks obtained for each exam, in proportion to the number of credits, contribute to the final grade of thirty.
