Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to give a broad understanding of the basic principles and technologies applied in the preparation of different pharmaceutical dosage forms: powders, granules, tablets, capsules, solutions, eye drops, ointments, creams, emulsions, suspensions, gels, suppositories.
Course contents
Pharmaceutical technology (Module 1 – Prof. Paolo Blasi)
Introduction to medicinal products and dosage forms. Principles of biopharmaceutics.
Solid dosage forms. Powders. Granules and granulation. Tablets and compaction. Coating of tablets and multiparticulates. Hard and soft capsules. Suppositories and pessaries.
Liquid dosage forms. Interfacial phenomena. Properties of solutions, suspensions, emulsions. Syrups. Sterilization and sterile dosage forms. Parenterals.
Pharmaceutical technology (Module 2 – Prof. Teresa Cerchiara)
Semisolid dosage forms. Principles of rheology. Creams, ointments, gels and pastes. Vegetable drugs preparations.
Galenic Laboratory (Modules 3 and 4 – Prof. Paolo Blasi and Prof. Teresa Cerchiara)
Preparation of the following galenic formulations: capsules, syrups, suspensions, emulsions, creams, ointments, pastes, suppositories and pessaries. Calculation of price, packaging and labeling.

Teaching methods
Lectures (module 1, 40 hours; module 2, 16 hours) and practical experience in the Galenic laboratory (modules 3/4, 60 hours each one).

Assessment methods
Modules 1 and 2 Oral exams.
Module 3 or 4 Preparation of a galenic formulation, calculation of price, packaging and labelling.
