Learning outcomes

Through the laboratory activity of the fifth year (250 hours) the student perfects the skills acquired in the four-year course on the various materials. At the end of the course the student has matured the critical capacity to coherently organise the complex process of a restoration intervention, and possesses sufficient autonomy to evaluate and manage the problems present in ceramic and glass materials and artefacts.

Course contents

The fifth year is dedicated to the thesis with targeted conservation-restoration activities, both individual and in groups, aimed at perfecting the skills acquired in the previous years by demonstrating that one has matured the critical capacity to coherently organise the complex process of a restoration intervention, starting from documentary research to the diagnostic phases, from the interpretation of alteration and degradation processes to the determination of the correct intervention procedure.

The activities are carried out in the laboratory, at archaeological sites or sites of museum interest, on worksite schools.

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, attendance of this training activity requires all students to complete Modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e-opportunita/salute-e-assistenza/salute-e-sicurezza/sicurezza-e-salute-nei-luoghi-di-studio-e-tirocinio] and to participate in Modules 3 and 4 of specific training on health and safety in the workplace. Information on dates and attendance of the specific training modules can be found in the appropriate section of the course website. For specific activities in the restoration laboratories, health suitability is required, which is assessed following a medical examination organised by the University's Occupational Medicine Service.

Assessment methods

The student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired a good knowledge of the bibliography as well as the ability to link the content learnt, to develop a project and to use the correct terminology. Assessment will take into account active participation in lectures and exercises, and improvement in technique over the course of the year. By virtue of the above criteria, the student will be tested for each module of the Laboratory activities, obtaining a grade of merit (insufficient, sufficient, good, more than good, excellent, excellent). Suitability will only be awarded in the event of all grades being equal to or above sufficient.

Teaching tools

The teaching material will be uploaded onto the online platform provided by the university.
