Learning outcomes

The student is able to apply the methodologies of anatomo-pathological diagnosis and methods of sampling and investigation anatomo-cyto-histo-pathological, useful to recognize the cause of a disease or a death of an animal. The student is able to achieve a diagnostic interpretation at autopsy or during the microscopic observation.

Course contents

At the end of the Integrated Course (C.I) of Practice in Pathology and Transmissible Diseases

  • the student knows the necropsy techniques and the anatomic pathology diagnostic methods and is able to apply them in order to recognize the cause of a disease or death of an animal. The student is able to achieve a post-mortem diagnosis, complete a post-mortem report and understand the general principles of interpretation and reporting of microscopic changes.

  • the student is able to manage parasites (including zoonotic agents) in animals (hosts) by applying basic diagnostic tools for the recognition of parasites and the clinical forms in companion animals, in the context of animal production and food safety, and by evaluating the consequences of the host / parasite / environment relationship for a rational management of parasites.

  • He is able to evaluate the welfare and biosecurity aspects of bovine / ovine-caprine farms; is able to evaluate the management and structural aspects of kennels and shelters; is able to propose corrective actions and improvement interventions in shelters and kennels;

Objectives: to acquire skills related to the anatomo-pathological diagnostic procedures. Specifically:

(1) independent execution of necropsy with production of appropriate reporting,

(2) independent execution of pathological examination of isolated organ or viscera from slaughtered animals and writing an appropriate report,

(3) knowledge of the technical procedures for histology, cytology and immunohistochemistry,

(4) comprehension of the general principles of interpretation and reporting in diagnostic cytology and histology.

Teaching methods

Organization of the internship:

Number of students for group and duration of the internship:

· Groups of up to eigth students

· Two weeks (10 days), maximum two absences

· Prerequisites: Anatomic Pathology (III year)

Exchange student:

· Language Skills: certification A2 in Italian or English.

· Prerequisites: matching skills of General Pathology and Anatomic Pathology

· Reservation under the same conditions of Unibo students

Organization of the rounds:

· The first morning: presentation of the structure, activities and organization, and visit to the laboratories.

· Four mornings in the dissecting room, for postmortem examinations, and independent writing of necroscopic report for each animal examined.

· One mornings in the dissecting room for examinations of isolated organs from slaughtered animals.

· The remaining days: participation in the laboratory activities and independent microscopical observation (cytological and histological).

 

In case it becomes necessary to apply the precautionary measures due to the COVID-19 emergency, working groups between students will take care of developing issues assigned by the teacher in synchronous and asynchronous modality. The activities will be carried out online (Teams platform) through supervised work, interactive conversations and final collegial discussion on what has been elaborated independently.

The activities can then resume in presence when the feasibility conditions occur.

 

Assessment methods

Evaluation of skills and competences acquired

· when performing autopsies the trainee has at its disposal a waterproof laptop where post mortem findings can be directly recorded on an electronic form. At the end of the autopsy the teacher checks and corrects the report produced

· during the observation at the microscope the trainee must produce a report including description, differential diagnosis, diagnosis, and comment. At the end of the observation the teacher checks and corrects the report produced

Teaching tools

During the training the students utilize the equipments of the structure. Specifically:

- for macroscopical diagnosis (autopsies and examination of isolated organs): dissecting room equipped with 6 steel tables, desk with winch for large animals, dissecting instruments, waterproof laptops to record the findings in real-time, personal protective equipment, cell fridge.
- for the microscopical diagnosis: multihead microscope, histological and cytological specimens.
- for laboratory activities: equipment relevant to the histological, cytological and immunohistochemical procedures.
