Course contents

Skin. Structure and functions of skin. Biological functions of skin. Color of skin. Percutaneous absorption.

Hair. Generation of hair. Form and composition of hair shaft. Chemical composition of hair. Physical characteristics of hair. Hair damage.

Purpose and meaning of cosmetics.

Raw materials of cosmetics. International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. Oily materials, surface active agents, humectants, thickening agents, antioxidants, sequestring agents, antimicrobial agents, color materials, fragrances.

Cosmetic systems. Monophasic systems. Biphasic systems. Non conventional systems: patches, micro/nanoparticles, liposomes, phytosomes.

Functional cosmetics. Skin care cosmetics and body care cosmetics: moisturizers and humectants, emollients, deodorants and antiperspirants, suncare cosmetics, cleasing ingredients, antiaging, vasoactives. Hair care cosmetics: anti-dandruff cosmetics, hair cleasing cosmetics, hair grooming cosmetics, hair colorant and hair bleach.

Phytocosmetic products. Properties and uses of plants and herbal extracts in cosmetic preparations.

Cosmetic Regulation in the European Union.

The course includes laboratory activities.

Teaching methods

Theorical lessons and laboratory practice.

Oral examination.

Teaching tools

The theoretical lessons will be held by using slides. The pratical activities will be carried out in laboratories equipped with galenic instrumentation.
