Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will know the basic principles about the most important diseases caused by pathogen microorganisms.

Course contents

  1. General principles about diagnosis and therapy of infectious diseases.
  2. Respiratory tract infections: flu, alveolar and interstitial pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis
  3. Gastro-intestinal infections: cholera, minor salmonellosis
  4. Viral hepatitis
  5. Skin and soft tissue infections
  6. Infectious osteomyelitis, infectious arthritis
  7. Infectious endocarditis
  8. Viral and bacterial meningitis
  9. Arthropod-borne infections: Lyme disease
  10. Sepsis
  11. HIV infection and AIDS
  12. Tropical diseases: malaria,trypanosomiasis, schistosomiasis, filariasis, yellow fever, fever returning from the tropics

Teaching methods

Frontal lesson will be conducted in a lecture hall where multimedia instruments are available, with the predominant support of PowerPoint slides


Assessment methods

The assessment examination will be performed at the end of the course by oral or a written test including multiple-choice questions regarding all the presented topics.

Teaching tools

PowerPoint slides presented by a video-projector.
