Learning outcomes

The knowledge of the fundamental tools of statistical inference - likelihood, estimation and hypothesis testing - for normal, binomial and Poisson models, regression models and generalized linear models.

Course contents

Statistical Inference: sampling, population model and parameters.

The exponential family

Estimation theory:

i) estimators and sampling distributions.

ii) Likelihood function and Fisher information.

iii) maximum likelihood estimators - method of the moments.

iv) confidence intervals

Hypothesis Testing:

i) errors of I and II type, significance level and p-value.

ii) Statistica tests for normal and binary models

iii) Statistica testsfor comparing the means of two populations

iv) Chi-square test for independence

v) Inference for the linear model
