Learning outcomes

Basic knowledge of the chemistry of the sea, the chemical composition of the oceans and the factors that rule it. It is able to identify the main issue related to pollution in a certain area, the methods that can be used to quantify the pollution concenrs, the possible solution to relevant pollution concerns.

Course contents

  • Introduction to marine pollution: which are the most relevant problems and identify effects on society and the environment.
  • Pollution deriving from organic matter: BOD, COD, organic load
  • Heavy metals: in-depth study of the Minamata Bay case
  • Synthetic organic compounds: Oil spills, persistent pollutants, emerging pollutants, new problems.
  • Plastics and solid waste: Types of materials, properties, effects on the marine environment and possible solutions.
  • Historical examples and topics on request: Case studies and more in-depth discussion on selected topics with students.
