Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student: learns the historical coordinates for the study of literature; knows the techniques of textual analysis; acquires a sure competence in writing and the ability to read in depth some fundamental works of our literary tradition.

Course contents

COURTESANS, CRITICS AND PROPHETS. THE FIGURE OF THE INTELLECTUAL IN ITALIAN LITERATURE FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE 20TH CENTURY. PERSPECTIVES AND EXEMPLARY TEXTS.

MODULE A (15 lessons) The first part of the course will focus on reading and commenting a choice exemplary texts of Italian literature, which allow to outline the figure of the intellectual, from Dante to the late nineteenth century (from Dante to Carducci).

MODULE B (15 lessons) The second part of the course will focus on the twentieth century: on the intellectual partnership of Riccardo Bacchelli and other intellectuals during fascism and, starting from this experience, on the Manzonian heritage, considered in particular in the figure of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Leonardo Sciascia.

Students will have to prepare the exam on the following texts:

A)

G. ALFANO, P. ITALIA, E. RUSSO, F. TOMASI, Profile of Italian literature Milan, Mondadori, 2021 (a single volume, which runs from the origins to the 19th century).

Attending students will be able to study only the authors and texts that will be addressed in class. Non-attending students will have to study the entire manual.

B) ALESSANDRO MANZONI, Storia della Colonna infame (the text will be framed in the light of the site http://www.alessandromanzoni.org/opere).

Attending students will be able to choose two works from the five indicated; non-attending students must study all the works indicated.

ATTENDING STUDENTS ARE CONSIDERED THOSE WHO HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 50 HOURS OF LESSONS OUT OF 60.

Teaching tools

The exam consists of an oral test and a written test. The oral exam concerns module A and module B. On module A, students will be questioned by Dr. Stefano Scioli. If the health conditions of the country allow it, some seminars, held by Dr. Scioli himself, may be "activated" to support the study of the Italian literature manual. The written test consists of a series of open-ended questions, which allow to verify the student's achievements and his ability to argue them. If the health conditions of the country allow it, the written test will be held in the classroom (otherwise, on EOL).
