Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student possesses notions of law relating to the technical report for the Prosecutor and the expertise, the DNA database, the laws on drugs, informed consent, professional confidentiality, professional responsibility. Furthermore, the student acquires the knowledge of forensic genetics relating to the collection of biological traces, the chain of custody, presumptive tests for the diagnosis of biological fluids, the extraction and typing of DNA, the statistical interpretation of the results using notions of biostatistics. The notions of Next Generation Sequencing applied to the forensic sector will also be acquired. The notions of forensic toxicology acquired concern the collection for toxicological purposes, the correct conservation with chain of custody also considering the repeatability of the analysis, the setting of the toxicological analysis in order to identify the active principles of poisons / toxic and psychotropic substances . The student acquires skills in analytical research on biological samples by identifying the most suitable matrix to answer the question and the basic technical knowledge for the use of gas chromatography and liquid chromatography. At the end of the course, the student acquires practical knowledge from a forensic perspective by integrating the toxicological, genetic and forensic pathology analytical findings on sexual offenses and in particular on sexual violence.

Course contents

The program includes: the scientific evidence and its procedural implications, notions of law on the subject of report to prosecutor and expertise, the inspection, the diagnosis of biological fluids, the analysis of DNA for the purposes of personal identification and study of the familiar relationship, the  mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome analysis for forensic purposes, statistical elements for the interpretation of genetic data, forensic pharmacogenetics, the DNA database, consent and professional confifdentiality, sexual violence.

The forensic toxicology part will deal with the techniques used on biological samples from the cadaver and on powders. Analytical techniques for the determination of alcohol and narcotic substances will be treated with the application in the various branches of law. The problems relating to new psychoactive substances will be illustrated.

Assessment methods

Written test with multiple choice quiz. The questionnaire consists of 32 questions on the topics covered in class. The grade of 30 is reached with the correct answer to 30 quizzes and laude is reserved for those who provide all the correct answers.

The student will be able to request the vision of his / her paper and the wrong answers will be shown and discussed.
