The student will be capable of understanding and producing a wide range of written and oral texts in Russian.

Course contents

Russian Language and Culture I - Prof.Raffaella Romagnoli

This is a course targeted at absolute beginners. We are going to address the following topics:
WRITING SYSTEM AND PHONETICS: The Russian alphabet. Russian sounds and letters. Vowel reduction and consonant voicing.

MORPHOLOGY: Nouns. Gender and number of nouns. Personal, demonstrative, possessive, interrogative, reflexive pronouns. Adjectives and ordinal numbers. Cardinal numbers. Noun, adjective, pronoun and number declension. The use of prepositions. Adverbs. Verbal system. Transitive and intransitive verbs. Reflexive verbs. Verb conjugation. Russian tenses. Verb aspect. Semantic relations between verb aspect and tense. Modality in Russian.

SYNTAX: Simple sentence. Some types of complex sentences and conjunctions.

Tutorials ("Lettorato")

The tutorials are an integral part of the course and attendance is compulsory. Tutorial activities: reading and writing exercises including dictations; grammar exercises, introduction of new vocabulary, practice in spoken Russian (dialogues and monological speech). Tutorials topics will be closely related to the material covered in Lingua e cultura and Mediazione courses.

Teaching methods

In addition to the structural presentation of the linguistic system, we will relay as much as possible on the communicative method for lexical enrichment and language practice, which will include independent reading of short texts by contemporary authors.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of two parts: written examination (lexical-grammatical test) of 3 hours duration, and oral examination (reading, translation, grammatical analysis of Russian texts, discussion on topics covered during tutorials).

Teaching tools

Hand-outs and multimedia on reading, listening, writing, speaking exercises will be provided for each tutorial.
